(v) Senior Medical Officer.

This officer is almost

always in charge of one of the Government hospitals and lives in hospital quarters; so that the grant

of free quarters causes little real extra expense.

(vi) Surveyors. We have deliberately attempted to

lessen the difference between salaries in this

service and in the Public Works Service.

(vii) Assistant Analyst. An approximately identical

scale has already been accepted by the Secretary of State. We propose no special salary for the Monopoly Analyst, Imports and Exports Department, as the duties of that post may be varied when a vacancy occurs and may not then justify anything

more than the time-scale.

(viii) Assistant Government Marine Surveyors.

Approximately

identical scales already recommended to the

Secretary of State.

(ix) Assistant Assessors. Public Works Department scales

have already been adopted in recent appointments. (x) Assistants, Royal Observatory. As these officers

are normally required to live in Observatory quarters, they will pay only 6% rent instead of 12% (under paragraph 3 (e) of the new General Order 117 proposed by us) and we have borne this in mind in putting the maximum at only £910.

(xi) Assistant Superintendent of Aerodrome.

22.

Approximately

identical scale already recommended to Secretary of

State.

We would emphasise that we have felt great difficulty in deciding on recommendations for many of these technical posts and assume that they will be closely scrutinised in the Colonial Office in the light of the greater experience available there of salaries prevailing

for such technical officers at home and in other Colonies.
